Wolf Greeting

Wolf Greeting

In my last post I shared the thrill of being next to a howling wild wolf.  Turns out, that wasn’t the end of the excitement.

After a few minutes of howling by the black wolf, a little movement in the woods to my left caught my eye.  Sure enough, another Wolf had walked to the edge of the forest and was surveying the situation.  After about a minute this second wolf walked up and greeted the first one - that is the moment captured here. I was too close to even get them both entirely in the same frame!  (more…)

Wolf emerging from the forest in Denali

Recently I have received a few email about wolves, and I thought why not do a series of posts on my favorite subject.  At times, I have invested large amounts of time looking for and trying to photograph wolves.  I would often return to a particular spot day after day and wait for the entire day in the hopes of spotting a wolf.  Without a doubt, this time spent has lead to some of my most memorable experiences and favorites images.  I hope to share some of them over the next few days.

Key-wording Woes

Imperial Beach Pier, California

This dark, gloomy photo of the Imperial Beach Pier kind of summed up my mood when I realized I some how lost the extended keywords to about 400 images!  Key-wording is about the only aspect of being a photographer that I don’t really like.  I now discovered something worse; re-key-wording the same images!  LOL.  O well.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California

We have just finished converting, adjusting and key wording a little over 450 new pictures from our last trip.  It always feels good to have that completed, now we can start adding them to our photo website, and sending them off to our agencies and marketing outlets.  And that means we can start thinking about our next trip! Seward Visitor Guide

I promise, this is the last of the new covers!  It had been a couple of months since I posted a cover photo on the blog, so I did have some catching up to do.

This is current year’s Seward Chamber of Commerce Visitor Guide for Seward, Alaska.  The Chamber was one of my very first customers many years ago, and their cover is one I’m always proud to be a part of!

Copper Basin Phone Book

I find I’m often frustrated when shooting extreme activities.  The mountains never look as steep, and the drops as high when I look at my photos after the fact.  A couple of years ago I discovered the secret to shooting extreme activities; (more…)

Landscaping with Native Plants of the Southwest

I thought I would continue the cover theme for a couple more days since we have a nice batch of new ones.  This is a photo from Organ Pipe National Monument in Arizona during the amazing spring bloom two years ago.  This looks really appealing to me right now - in Alaska we currently have mostly dirty snow and leafless trees.  Alaska makes a drastic transition in the next couple of months.

2007 Milepost

I picked a good time to do a series of posts on our new covers as the 2007 Milepost arrived in the mail just today.  This is a cover I’m really proud and excited of as the Milepost is a long running publication that I remember well even as a kid - every vehicle traveling to and through Alaska back then and today has one of these on the dash, as well they should.  (more…)

Fodor's 2007 Costa Rica Travel Guild

I think I mentioned here before that I still get a kick out of seeing my photos on the cover of publications.  Since I started doing some shameless self promotion in my last post, I thought I would continue by sharing some of our new covers over the next few days.  This cover of Fodor’s, along with the cover of Frommer’s Costa Rica 2007 are both from our trip to Costa Rica in 2004.  I haven’t written about that wonderful trip here yet, but you can go to our main website to see more of our photos of Costa Rica.

Popular Photography Magazine and Old Growth Forest

Fallen Redwood

Most people who view a mature forest full of big beautiful trees would mistakenly call it an old growth forest.  To be an old growth forest, some of the big beautiful trees need to start falling down due to natural causes.  The fallen trees can block streams creating valuable habitat for fish and other animals, and the decomposing tree offers the forest other benefits.  This is why old growth forest is so important.

I read up on this a few years ago while visiting the redwoods and was determined to photograph an example of an old growth forest.  While out hiking one day I found this scene which I thought did just that. I knew this wouldn’t be a calendar or travel image, but we work with a number of text book companies and I thought they could use it.  So what does this have to do with Popular Photography? (more…)

Humpback Whale in Seward, Alaska

Humpback Whale in Seward

Seward residents have been treated to a visiting Humpback Whale for the past week.  This isn’t one of those whales you can barely see looking South out the bay.  No, this whale has been coming right up to the head of the bay and swimming close to town, and even near the cruiseship dock!  We have seen it on four different days this week from our office - whale watching is sure a nice break from key-wording!  Yesterday there was a pretty big crowd of cars and locals watching.  I think it is pretty cool to see people stopping and still getting excited about a whale swimming by considering most residents of Seward have probably seen a lot of whales over the years. Two big thumbs up for the U.S. Alpine Ski Team!

Bodie Miller

The U.S. Alpine Ski team has been in Alaska this past week for the U.S. Alpine National Championships.  I didn’t make it this year, but my sister and her family did.  She said the skiers were awesome, taking the time to pose for photos and to autograph my nieces’ and nephew’s ski jackets and helmets.  Not just the B teamers, but the biggest stars like Bodie Miller and Julia Mancuso - two of the best skiers in the world!  My sister now has a cool family photo with Bodie Miller in it!  (more…)
