Coyote Pups

We moved up to Yellowstone on Tuesday, and yesterday (Wednesday) we were fortunate enough to find this coyote den with 9 (yes nine) pups!  They were so much fun to watch.  We even watched the mom nurse.  Here the pups are chasing after their mom - whenever she was close, they were trying to nurse.

The volcano erupting in front of the Mirage Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada.

We hit the road today for a couple of days as we head to the Tetons and Yellowstone.  In the meantime, I thought I would share a few more Las Vegas Photos.

Phil Ivey

Well I must admit, Janine and I are pretty avid Texas Hold’em players and fans, so when we learned that the Travel Channel was in Vegas for the WPT Mirage Poker Showdown - the first event of the next season - we had to check it out!  We have been parking in the back of the Mirage and entering through a side entrance as it is much easier then dealing with the strip.  Today on our way to the Mirage, we arrived at the same time as Phil Ivey!  We even shared the same bench for about 5 minutes.  (more…)

Calico Hills - Missed Photo Opportunity

Calico Hills

As I hiked and photographed in Red Rock Canyon the last couple of days, I have been lugging along my somewhat heavy 100-400 telephoto lens just in case I find some wildlife.  I bet you know where I’m going with this.   (more…)

Red Rock Canyon

I went back to Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, Nevada this morning for first light - I think I found the only patch of wildflowers in all of Southern Nevada this year!

I haven’t made it to the Strip yet - I’m thinking I will wait until the weekend visitors are gone and try photographing down there tomorrow.

We now have a section on our website of Red Rock Canyon Photos.

Captured with a Canon tilt / shift lens.

Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, Nevada

I had to get up at 4:30 this morning to be at this spot by first light - I think it was worth it.  It is hard to believe a place as nice as Red Rock Canyon can be found so close to the Las Vegas Strip - talk about two different worlds!

Las Vegas Panoramic

We are now in Las Vegas enjoying the warm weather.  Our Mojave travels were not productive for photography.  We didn’t see any baby quail in an area we had seen dozens a year ago.  Right after our trip a year ago, the area was burned by a wildfire.  Thanks to fire damage and drought, we found very little wildlife this year.  We may have been a week too early as well.    (more…)

Seward Campground

The May / June issue of Alaska Magazine was very good to us.  Along with the above photo of the Seward Campground in a add for the Milepost, we had photos in two different articles and then received a very nice mention in bold in the In Print section.  This is definitely an issue to be proud of!

I can’t believe we are already hitting the road again this weekend.  We didn’t really allow for enough time in the office, but that’s ok, we can’t miss this time of year!  I’m really excited about our upcoming travels.  (more…)

Grizzly Wolf Stand-off

This was on another visit to Denali, about a month after the chase that I wrote about yesterday.  The pups had left the den, and we could see them at a rendezvous site across the valley if we looked carefully with binoculars.  While we were watching, this very large grizzly wandered down the valley.  Three of the adult wolves walked to the top of the bank and watched very carefully - you can see two of them in this photo.  After a few minutes, the black yearling went down the bank presumably to run the bear off.  Unlike yesterday’s photo, this bear didn’t run.  In fact, he barely even looked up!  As you can see in this photo, he even has his back to the wolf as he feeds.  (more…)

Wolves chasing a Grizzly

Wolf and Bear Chase

The den for the Grant Creek wolf pack has been in a closed area fairly near the Denali National Park road.  Because of this, this stretch of road can be very popular with the visitors and tour buses.  We were there one day when out of no where a grizzly came charging down the road running in and out of the buses.  Janine speculated that maybe the wolves were on to him for being too close to the den.  Sure enough, a minute later came three member of the pack charging down between the same buses.  They followed the grizzlies scent out to the riverbed where they caught up to the small adult bear and the chase was on!  (more…)

Pack Creek Yearling

Denali Wolf

In the summer of 2004, the alpha pair had a litter of six.  From what I have been told, that fall the pack made an extended trip outside its range, and when it returned to the area only two of the six remained.  This is one of the two from early summer of 2005.  Except for a little less grey in the face, this yearling looks a lot like his father and uncle.  The other yearling was light brown.  Both of them were beautiful healthy wolves that loved to play and run, and were fearless even around grizzlies as I will share tomorrow.
