More autumn colors in Zion National Park, Utah.

This is looking through the arch in Hidden Canyon, Zion National Park, Utah.
We missed this little arch on our way into the canyon, it is only about 20 feet tall and tucked away on the right hand side, but that was ok, because it was fun exploring the beautiful little canyon. (more…)

Fall colors along the Virgin River in Zion. The colors are getting good!

Angel’s Landing Trail, Zion National Park, Utah.
When you first see the giant 1,500′ tall monolith of Angel’s Landing from the shuttle bus, you would think there is no way anyone except the most experienced rock climbers could stand on top. It is hard to fathom the fact that there is a regular park service maintained trail to the top! Now it isn’t exactly like any old trail, in fact they warn you on the bus that portions of the trail near the top are only 3 feet wide, with a 1,200′ vertical drop on one side, and an 800′ vertical drop on the other, with a chain railing down the middle! Court of the Patriarchs, Zion National Park, Utah.
This was last night under the full moon. Man it was bright! We were even making shadows.
This was a 30 second exposure, I was surprised by how much color and detail the digital camera was able to capture. Fun night of photography after a great hike to Angel’s Landing, but more on that tomorrow.

Desert Bighorn, Zion National Park, Utah
We watched this guy today chase one of the ewes around up and down these step cliffs for almost a half hour, it was very entertaining! I have always been amazed at the steep terrain these guys can traverse with ease.

Zion National Park, Utah.
We drove to Zion yesterday. When we arrived, we didn’t have much time before sunset, so I thought we would take a quick scouting trip to get a lay of the land. We got really lucky - I stopped at a random little pull-out and started hiking into some side canyon and stumbled into this wonderful patch of color! It was just out of view from the road. Then we got even luckier and found a half dozen Desert Big Horn! That may be tomorrows post. (more…)

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.
I was really fortunate to find this patch of Sacred Datura wildflowers right before sunset. I wish I had a little more time to work this location, the sun was setting fast- I’m tempted to return to this spot.
Here are more Valley of Fire State Park photos.

The road winding through the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.
I think this provides a pretty good preview of what the landscape is like in this beautiful state park.

Fire Canyon, Valley of Fire State Park Nevada
Man, Valley of Fire State Park is awesome! Endless geographical colors and patterns, the photo opportunities are everywhere. Despite numerous recommendations, I had never visited this state park - I won’t make that mistake again, heck it is only an hour from Las Vegas.

The Venetion Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

For exercise, photography and fun, we have been mountain biking out at Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas. (more…)

New York New York, Las Vegas. They were so excited about that name that I guess that felt it needed repeating. (more…)

A number of years ago I took a photo of this Las Vegas Welcome sign while zooming my lens. I probably wasn’t the first to do that, and I’m sure I won’t be the last, but it ended up being a fairly popular photo. This trip I wanted to do something different with the sign. (more…)

While wandering around Reno last week, I was surprised to read the signage on one of the largest buildings in downtown Reno - it said “National Bowling Stadium”. I thought, surely a building this large couldn’t be all for bowling, there must be more going on in there. We had to go inside to investigate. Sure enough, this was one huge bowling ally! Along with the large stadium seating, there were 80 separate bowling lanes! Maybe this is one of those places that everyone knows about except me, but it sure surprised me!

Fall colors along Lake Tahoe.
We were going to move on to Moab but have changed our minds. I have a few days of office work, and have decided against making the two day drive across the west to a place we couldn’t count of the Internet. Instead we have opted to spend some time in Las Vegas. We have a place with a fast Internet connection - but we will take some time for some fun and photography as well. From here we will still head to Zion for a couple of weeks for another complete change of pace!
I had one nice morning and one nice evening at Lake Tahoe, the rest of the time was cloudy mixed with rain and some snow. If I had more nice light - this spot is where I was going to photograph. (more…)

Lake Tahoe, California.
This is from the California side of the lake, Emerald Bay to be exact. (more…)

Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
This is the same spot as yesterday, just facing more towards the west.
