Anza-Borrego Wildflowers

Wildflowers, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.

After yesterday’s gloomy post, I thought I would post something a little brighter!  In 2005 I arrived here near the end of February and missed the peak wildflowers.  This year, they are just now getting good.  The yellow flowers (Brittlebush) you see here are just now starting to come into bloom in a few places.  On the other hand, it has been a great year for Chuparosa (aka hummingbird-bush) – the red plant you see here.   Together, the two make a great combination!

Yeah, Ron, be more positive. Geeze ;-)

This is fantastic. I was hoping to get down there today, but the day job has me tied down. Thanks for your posts–looking forward to seeing more from Anza Borrego…

Glad to see that you’re finding more patches of color Ron! Thanks for keeping everyone posted on the status; I’m still considering another run down again for longer weekend should things start to pick up (and timing works out around some other business travel…).

Have you heard anything about the status of Death Valley? If I come back down, planning on making a wider swing through the area if conditions are good…

Thanks for the update.
I will be down in the south end again tomorrow and will give you a report.

Ocotillo is also having a Cactus Festival Saturday which sounds interesting. :-)

Thanks Greg – sorry I won’t meet you!

Thanks Greg – sounds like it is still early for DV, but it could be pretty good this year. The color is coming along pretty good here, by next weekend should be great.

Hi Bob – Thanks – look forward to your reports. I have tour so will miss the Festival. Have a great weekend!

Oh darn, you must be disappointed to have missed 2005! But this is nice color.

You’re making me miss the desert! I’ll be back in April but I think that’ll be a bit late for peak wildflowers. Glad I can see yours in the meantime!

Hi Richard – Fortunately I hit peak just about everywhere else in the Southwest. Thanks.

Hi Mike – Thanks! Wildflowers are running late this year, you might have good timing.

Hi Ron
Not much happening in the southern areas. Some yellow barrel cactus blooms and a few fishhook cactus flowers. I did notice more Sand Verbena and Desert Dandelions off the S2 outside of Ocotillo.
Besides that I would say 2-3 more weeks?
Lots of buds ready to flower but still a bit early

Hi Bob,

I saw you blog – I think you might be right on the 2 to 3 weeks prediction unless it warms up soon. It is still seasonably cold and very windy – that doesn’t help. Hopefully it doesn’t get too hot after this.

Up on this end Borrego Palm Canyon is still about the best thing going, although I can’t imagine how busy it must be on the weekends – the town of Borrego Springs was packed!
