Above is a full frame version of a recent image captured with my Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 500 f/4, plus a Canon 2X extender III. I have had people question the use of the Canon 2x Extender III concerned about the drop off of sharpness and image quality when adding an extender / converter. Personally, I have zero hesitation using this combination. Below is a 100% crop of the above image so that you can judge for yourself.

Nice image. At greater focal lengths, I think user error is more of a contributing factor of any fall off in image quality than the equipment.
Looks darn good to me. Still good detail. User needs to know what they are doing, like with any photo taking. Keep up the wonderful work, and thanks for sharing

Thanks Andy – I agree!
Thanks Mary – true!
Is that still only manual focus with that combination?

Donna – no, the center auto-focus point will work with this combination – The 5D Mark III will auto-focus at f/8.
