Costa’s Hummingbird

Costa’s Hummingbird Nest.

I thought I would stick with the bird theme.  This hummingbird is tiny!  According to Sibley, it is one of our smallest birds – it weighs in at 3.5 grams.  I shot this right at sunrise with a 600, plus 2x converter, plus extension tubes and still couldn’t fill the frame.

You can see this little gal right outside the Anza-Borrego Visitor Center.  Employees roped off the area surrounding the nest after a dog started sniffing near the nest; that does make finding the bush with the nest a lot easier, look for the barriers.

  2. I would be very interested in knowing your camera/lens settings.
    600 X2 + extention tubes = WOW
Have a great rest of your trip, and please keep sending back these beautiful shots.

    Thanks Denear,

I shot these at ISO 800, f/5.6 and around a 1/30th of a second. I also used a little fill flash since the sunrise was behind the bird. Even with the 600 and 2x converter, the bird was too small in the frame at my minimum focus distance, so I added an extenstion tube which allowed me to get a little closer and still focus. These guys are tiny!

  4. Hi, lovely site! Kudos to you and your wife for these wonderful pictures. Can you tell me what your useage policy is? I am asking both in reference to use of your pictures on my personal blog, as well as in my work (university extension)…

Thanks, and I hope you continue enjoying the vibrant spring we’re having here in the southwest!

    Thank you very much JP!

If it is a personal blog, and you provide us a link, and if you can use an image straight from this site, or our main site without us having to resize it, then that is cool with me.

As far as the University works goes, I guess it would depend on how you were using it – if you like would could email or call you for specifics.

    Thanks,

    Ron

  6. This photo is beautiful. I recently found a Anna’s nest at the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Love the way the sunset colors look in your photo. Your photos make me want to go back to anza!
