Dawson City – the real and fake

Dawson City Yukon

The top photo is of the real Dawson City, Yukon.  The bottom photo is a fake Dawson City; it is actually a movie set in Haines, Alaska leftover from the making of the movie White Fang.

It is easy to see why Hollywood would go to the efforts to build an entire city not too far from the real one – the Hollywood version is so much easier to photograph, there aren’t cars, people, powerpoles, powerlines and a bunch of other visual distractions.  I thought it was interesting to see how much smaller the building were in the Hollywood version.  I didn’t realize this at the time, but it became more obvious after looking at my photos of both locations side by side.

What do they do with the movie set now, Still film on it or just preserve it for tourism?

Hi Richard,

I don’t think they have used it again, but I bet they could. They seem to keep it around for the tourism – it sits at the fairgrounds. Some of the buildings have business in them, you can walk around the set for free. It is pretty neat . Now I want to see the movie again.

Thanks,

Ron
