Denali National Park Wolf

Wild Wolf

Up until now, I have only posted photos of the Toklat Pack in Denali National Park.  Beginning in 2002 I started seeing this female fairly regularly much further west in the Park in an area that is typically known as the range for the Grant Creek Pack.  Unfortunately she wore an ugly research collar which made many of my photos of her less desirable.  I was able to hide the collar in this photo by getting low enough for the vegetation to block it.  To make matters worse, her collar didn’t even work.

A biologist I talked wasn’t sure if she had a den at this point in time – whenever I saw her she was always alone – but a familiar face was about to change that – more on that tomorrow.  The one thing I will say about this female, she was a hunting machine.

  3. Great stuff dude. I can’t get enough of this. I am coming up to Seward and you are going to find us some wolves to photograph! 🙂

  4. Yes, I was talking about the aerial wolf control. The wolf is now delisted in my state of Minnesota. In the southern half of the state, wolves can be killed anywhere, anytime. In the northern half, where I live, wolves can only be killed if harassing/attacking livestock or other domestic animals. 90% of wolves are in the northern part of the state anyway, and I guess they want to keep it that way! Now, if I could only get as close to them as you have!

  5. Hey Ron

Keep this series going as long as you want man. I’ll order some pizza and sit here until you show more photos of ice snails.

I think I know what happens tomorrow. 🙂

    Cheers

Richard – You definitely need to make it to Alaska!

Alan – It is a shame to see such a wonderful animal villianized.

Carl, I think you probably do!

    Thanks for the comments!
