Hi Tom,

Great question, and yes this could have been fairly easily done with Photoshop - in fact it was one of the things I covered last weekend. It isn't uncommon for me to use the filters, and to bracket some exposures so that I have the Photoshop option back in the office. If I can quickly get it right with the filters in the field then I will. If not, then I turn to Photoshop.

Thanks for the question,

I noticed on one of your pages that you sometimes trained people on photoshop. Could you have taken this picture (actually take two pictures...one with for the bright segment, the other for the darker segment) and used photoshop to "glue" them together? Do you think that would have worked as well as using the filter?

Interested newbie

Thanks...Tom

Hi Sid,

You might start with the 3 stop hard-edge - this is the filter I use the most. A two stop soft edge would be my next suggestion, if you were to buy two, I would start with those two.

I am a beginner and have taken interest and appreciated good photographs for a long time. At this moment I only have a polariser filter and would like to buy some graduated cokin brand filters, I have a budget set for possibly four filters. Can any one tell what filters I should be buying as my first purchase for landscape photography. Thanks

Hi Ozbloke,

Didn't see your comment - yeah, I almost always use a tripod. You can get a Cokin P size filter holder for the neutral density filters - I have used that on occasion.

Thanks Sid!

Thank you for this article.
I assume that you you use a tripod if you just hold the filters in front of the lens.
I am trying to work out how to easily attach filters to my Canon S2is as I never use a tripod.
