Mendenhall Glacier Pool

About 75 feet into the glacier cave from where Janine was yesterday (hard to judge scale in such an environment) the stream flows into this large pool of water inside the middle of the glacier!  What an amazing site, like nothing I have ever seen.  A photo can’t begin to do this justice, the sounds, the cool breeze in the cave, the dripping water from the roof, the erie sounds, none of that comes through in a photo.

I know of some people who have jumped the stream to the rock on the far side for a better view of this amazing blue room and pool – I was chicken.  It could be difficult to get out after a fall into that water!  This whole place really is pretty spooky – after taking photos, I usually rushed out – it was always a relief to emerge safely.  But then I was immediately drawn back in to see an experience more.  I know of at least one guide service that will take clients in here, so it must not be overly dangerous, but it isn’t a place to linger either.  I wouldn’t be surprised to read of someone being hurt or worse in this cave one day.  To me, seeing such an unique place was worth the risk!

  1. I just bought a house in Juneau this afternoon while surfing the web. I will be adding this glacier to my blog in a few days. 🙂

  3. Ron,

I am such a fan of your work. So much so that your blog is the only photo blog I visit on a regular basis. I just signed to a stock agency, and wish it were a full time thing for me, as it is for you. Keep shooting!

    Peace

Thanks much Drew! Maybe it will turn into a full-time thing – it eventually did for me after many years.

  5. Awesome shots! We’d like to escape from the cruise ship throngs, rent a kayak and see this cave. Can you let us know the guide service that takes folks there????
