I know exactly what you are talking about. I photographed this while waiting for the Gila Woodpecker, so I was using a 600 with 2x converter, that was about the only way I could bet a decent background. Thanks Rick!

I tried shooting a few Ocotillo last time I was out at Joshua Tree, but the blooms were so high up on the plant that all I had for back ground was boring clear sky - I like this much better. The dark shadow really makes the red pop. Nice bright red Ron.
