Richard, the red color is some type of bacteria - you see it on the snow near the glaciers around Kenai Fjords National Park as well - especially towards the end of summer.  Around here it can get kind of thick as it accumulates in low spots.  Since this is from the air, I would say it must be pretty thick in this area as well.</description>
