Snowshoeing in Turnagain Pass

Snowshoeing

About a week ago I wrote of the beautiful snow in Turnagain Pass, and mentioned I would be heading there with my snowshoes on the next nice day.  Well yesterday was that day.  It was a beautiful – well except for the 16 degrees below zero temperature.  I don’t know how much snow is up there, but the Alyeska Ski Resort not far away received 24 feet of snow in December.  I’m sure Turnagain Pass received its fair share.

Breaking trail in snowshoes takes a little extra effort, I was sinking in about a foot into the powdery top layer.  On the way back it was a breeze.  The trees just look awesome, each one is a unique character.  That is me in the top photo.  My number one model (Janine) was busy, so I used a remote control and posed for this photo.

The chilly temperature added an extra challenge.  I can usually shoot for days on one of my camera’s rechargeable batteries.  Today I went through all four!  I was never able to warm them up enough to get any extra life out of them – good thing there wasn’t a sunset or I would have been out of luck.  Otherwise the Canon 5D performed very well after about 3 hours of exposure.  This was my first time shooting in such cold temperatures with this particular body.  Even the LCD screen continued to work well – I can’t say the same about the one on my cell phone who’s display turned very faint.

We now have a page of winter recreation photos.
