Tahoe Fall

Tahoe Fall

Fall colors along Lake Tahoe.

We were going to move on to Moab but have changed our minds.  I have a few days of office work, and have decided against making the two day drive across the west to a place we couldn’t count of the Internet.  Instead we have opted to spend some time in Las Vegas.  We have a place with a fast Internet connection – but we will take some time for some fun and photography as well.  From here we will still head to Zion for a couple of weeks for another complete change of pace!

  1. Hi Ron,

My husband and I would like to know what type of Internet connection you use while on the road? Do you use WiFi or a Wireless Broadband Card?

    Thanks,
    Sherri

    Hi Sherry,

We use both. Well we don’t have a Wireless Broadband Card, but we use a Blackberry tethered to our laptop which in effect does the same thing, but gives us the ability to check email without the laptop. This has been huge for us. We used to take time each day to find an internet cafe in order to take care of business. Now, just a quick glance at the BB, and we can see if we have any business – if we do, we just hook the BB up to the laptop and we are off and running. We even use this method for uploading large high-res images just like we would at home.

Not all locations are broadband. Jackson Wyoming for example wasn’t although that is supposed to change any day. At places without broadband coverage, the tethered BB still works at speeds about 4x the speed of dial-up. It is still fast enough to upload files and do business.

Finally, I work from an old laptop, and I use a wifi card in it. We can usually find campgrounds with wifi, although they often have poor signals. I recently purchased an external USB wifi N card – it has little antennas on the card and connects via a USB cord. This card has greatly improved my ability to pick up wifi signals – I can now get decents coverage in areas I didn’t have a signal.

I have had other people ask about this, maybe I will use this comment as a future post since many readers here only subscribe to the feed and never see the comments.

    Thanks,

    Ron

  3. I would think that Moab would have some RV parks with wiFi in town. Moab is pretty touristy after all. It’s a long drive though… I was just in Vegas on Wednesday.

  4. I guess WiFi ain’t all that great. When I went up to SF, I had to park in front of a hotel lobby to try getting a signal. Even then it was only half the speed as what I get at home.

Yeah, I imagine I could have found good wifi. I would really like to spend some time in Moab – at least two weeks. Maybe next year!
