Winter Light

Yesterday's sunrise over Resurrection Bay, Seward, Alaska.

I always feel a bit guilty when I can grab a photo of a scene like this without even leaving the home / office – seems like I should have to get up early, travel far, and hike a long ways to “earn” the photo.  But, it does all balance out – I was up until 2:00 a.m. last night hoping to find and photograph Northern Lights to no avail.

Beautiful image Ron. And you’re right, you shouldn’t feel quilty because it does all even out as far as the “easy” shots vs. the ones that require all the work.

Absolutely beautiful!

Just a little jealous cause I look outside of my home/office all I see is frozen asphalt with cars. Sometimes it can be pretty, but I wouldn’t ever call it beautiful or stunning like your photograph.

Can you photograph the Northern Lights from your house, Ron?

Øyvind December 14, 2010 at 1:31 pm

That is a nice view! I really like the colors!

Dennis Barton December 14, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Beautiful sunrise shot Ron. If it’s outside the door take advantage of it.

Ron December 14, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Thanks a lot everyone!

@ Richard Not really – there is a street light a couple of doors down that is too bright. I pretty much need to drive a couple miles to get away from town and the lights. Even at that, it takes a pretty good show for them to appear this far South and West.

This is a lovely picture and right outside your front door your so lucky.

Oh, big deal–radiant magenta sky over a blue mountain–like everyone doesn’t have that in their back yard :) I have a falling down fence and a view of my neighbor’s garbage cans–now that’s an impressive view.

Ron, love the shot. Approximately what time was the shot taken?

Ron December 15, 2010 at 9:15 am

Thanks Corey!

Jeff – LOL – Thanks.

Ron – Good question, that was about 9:40 a.m.

Bryan Grant Photography December 16, 2010 at 12:04 pm

wow 940 seems late i guess the better question is what time relative to the sun rise

Ron December 16, 2010 at 12:12 pm

I think the sun is coming over the mountains around 10:15 or so, maybe a little later. Sunrises last a long time here in the winter – there was a time last year where we had a great sky for over an hour!

Wow. Just beautiful. We’ve lived in Alaska for a year and a half now and I still am in awe at it’s beauty every single day. I have taken so many pictures but of course they don’t compare to yours as I shoot on auto on our little D40. : ) To be honest, when we were deciding whether or not to move up here, I was researching AK and came across your blog. That evening I told my husband – I’m convinced. Lets move.

Nina (UK) December 17, 2010 at 1:40 am

A lot jealous– all I would get is cars and dustbins !!

Ron December 17, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Hi Trisha,

Hey that is a great story – thanks for sharing and it is cool to think I had a little something to do with it! Thanks!

Hi Nina – LOL
