Brown Bear

I went back to my secret little bear spot today with hopes of showing the bears in more of their beautiful rain forest environment.  I tried using a remote wide angle for some up close images – tomorrow I will show you what happened to that effort.

  1. soooo, how secret? Do you take bribes? 🙂 Seriously, love your bear shot! Especially their surroundings. Different from the standard “Alaska brown bear on the tundra or sedge grass”.

  2. Some impressive wildlife work Ron. When you venture into grizzly territory like this, are you traveling solo? It seems kinda nerve-wracking to me.

  3. That patch of devils club on the far side of the river looks familiar. I’m pretty sure I photographed it about 5 years ago. I’m looking for bribes from Ron for me not telling the location, and from the rest of you for the coordinates. I’m Kidding on the bribes part of course.

Nice stuff as always Ron, and it must be quite sweet to have a local brownie to play with.

    Thanks Guys!

It has been a lot of fun having a local brown bear and cub!

It really isn’t much of a secret. This sow and cub have been pretty visible around here this summer – they even showed up in front of the Resurrection Roadhouse restaurant for a few night earlier this summer and emptied the place as people ran for their cameras.

For some reason I haven’t had any luck finding her despite a number of telephone tips – well at least until this week. This week I decided to put in the extra time looking and waiting, and it has paid off.

Richard, I’m pretty cautious around bears, and I carry bear spray. I have seen some people getting ridiculously close. She seems to tolerate them, but I won’t do it.

    Thanks,

    Ron

  5. Ron, you are very smart not to get too close. Bear spray is fine, but it gives some a false sense of security. It doesn’t even work on some bears. Studies are starting to suggest that bears are becoming immune to bear spray. But definately carry it. So far these incidents have been isolated.

Either her or her cub trashed my camera. Actually, they probably just gently pushed it over out of curiosity – I don’t blame them, they were just being bears. I just wished I could have captured a photo with their nose on my lens!

Seems like nothing is perfect, but I think bear spray is still the better then the alternative.

    Thanks Beth!

  7. Yeah, I think the alternative is worse. There are so many people that actually STUN me by trying to get their kids next to bears for a picture! I think these people are just city-folk, certainly they can’t be that stupid!!! I am constantly amazed that these people put their most prized possessions next to the most ferocious animals on earth just to get a picture to show Aunt Sally!!
