This part of our visit to Slab City was sure a colorful surprise!  This 50 foot high mountain made of straw, adobe and lots and lots of paint is constructed into a hillside near the entrance to Slab City.  It is amazing what can be constructed with enough time and effort.  This mountain is the creation of Leonard Knight.  We were able to meet Leonard while we were there, he was very friendly and passionate man who was nice enough to take the  time to give us a nice tour of Salvation Mountain.  For a photographer like me who is attracted to bright, bold colors, this spot was a dream!    Below is a photo of Leonard while leading the tour.

  2. That is sooo cool! That’s what I was telling you about, Slab City, such an interesting place. When we were kids , it was something new every year when we drove down there! For us kids, it was so exciting. The people you’d meet & the coolest ” artistic ” work to gawk at. My mom & Dad liked going there, too. I am so glad you & Janine got down there. Have you been there before? A long time ago they were going to make the Salton Sea Area into a resort for the rich. I’m not sure what happened, but now it’s a resort for the weirdly inclined! I love it! You’ve also gotten some great other pics I was looking at on your site; The lynx is really cool. Perfect side shot! And the grizzlies. I am a bear fanatic! The breaching whale is beautiful!! Wish I could see that in my back yard!! Keep up the great work!! Have you & Janine ever been to ” Slab City ” before?

    Hi Beth,

    Thanks a lot!

You know, I had been to the Salton Sea as a kid, but I had never been to Slab City. It was a fascinating place, especially Salvation Mountain. It was a real treat to meet the actual creator!

    Thanks,

    Ron

  4. Glad you liked it! I’m sure yours & Janines schedules are crazy. But have you ever been to the Belly River area in The Bob Marshall Wilderness area? Elizabeth Lake? A very beautiful area. On a clear day it is superb.
